DIETRICH & MARIA is the true love story of German pastor, theologian, and spy, Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his fiancé, Maria Von Wedemeyer. Based on their real-life prison letters, the story takes place in Germany during the early days of WWII, with Dietrich imprisoned on charges of conspiracy for his alleged role in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler. The play is set during one of Maria's secret prison visits to Dietrich--the last time they would ever see each other. This gut-wrenchingly beautiful play explores the themes of truth and the power of true love in the darkest of circumstances.
DIETRICH & MARIA is a "two-hander", which means only two actors will be on stage for the entire show. If you've never attended a one or two person play, you are in for a treat. A stage full of actors creates another world, but a well executed two-hander casts an intimate spell and creates a genuinely human moment. Audience members will be invited, not just into a prison sitting room, but into the complex relationship between a righteous man and a fearless woman and the deep bond of love they shared.

THE ACTORS:
The roles of DIETRICH BONHOEFFER and MARIA VON WEDEMEYER will be played by veteran Canadian stage actors, Marc A. Moir and Laura Kathleen Turner. These industry professionals have been acting opposite each other for the better part of 15 years and are honoured to be bringing the beautiful and stark humanity of Dietrich & Maria to the stage for the very first time.
THE DETAILS:
DIETRICH & MARIA will run for four nights (February 21-24) at the Mennonite Heritage Village in Steinbach. The curtain goes up at 7:00 pm nightly. The play will then tour to the Kenmor Theatre in Morden (March 1-2), and the 7 Gen Educational Centre in Kenora, ON (March 8-9).
