Module 1 – Cultural Competence Development
What does it mean to be culturally competent?
This two-hour interactive workshop supports an introductory exploration of concepts related to culture and newcomer integration. Leveraging Pembina Valley statistics and newcomer stories, we will build a deeper understanding of the experience of our newcomer neighbours. At the end of this workshop, we will be able to:
Recognize the inner need of everyone to belong.
Explain the challenges of diversity and discrimination in the workplace.
Participate in activities to support personal awareness of discrimination.
Create an action plan to support Connecting Cultures & Communities in the Pembina Valley.
Module 2 – Culture & Communication
Communication is hard. Sometimes we are good at it and sometimes we struggle. What could we do to understand each other better?
This two-hour interactive workshop discusses the connection between culture and communication. We will participate in activities that encourage thoughtful consideration around our communication norms and patterns, and the impact that has on integration for everyone in the Pembina Valley. At the end of this workshop, we will be able to:
Explore the connection between culture and communication.
Identify communication challenges and strategies.
Participate in activities to support personal awareness of discrimination related to communication and misunderstandings.
Relate newcomer experiences to personal experience.
Create an action plan to support Connecting Cultures & Communities in the Pembina Valley.
